About

BetterHalf Films is a Canadaian film production company founded by filmmaker and producer Gursimran Datla. The company develops and produces film and series projects that engage with contemporary social realities, diasporic identities, and culturally specific narratives with global relevance.

Projects developed under BetterHalf Films have been recognized and presented at major cultural and film platforms, including the International Film Festival of South Asia Toronto (2022), Emerging Lens Cultural Film Festival (2023), Nuit Blanche Toronto (2023), and the MOSAIC International South Asian Film Festival (2025).

The company’s foundation is shaped by rigorous training in both creative and producing practices. Its work draws on advanced filmmaking and arts administration expertise developed through the National Screen Institute’s EAVE Producers Program, as well as international market exposure through the Reykjavik International Film Festival Talent Lab (2024).

In 2025, BetterHalf Films advanced its industry profile when its narrative series project Departure was selected as a pitch finalist at Content Canada during the Toronto International Film Festival. That same year, the feature project Reception placed among the final two pitches at the Forest City Film Festival, reinforcing the company’s standing within Canada’s independent film ecosystem.

BetterHalf Films also operates with an international outlook and market orientation, most recently participating in the Asia Film and TV Market as part of the official Canadian delegation.

Initiatives

Mentorships

Being a member of the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA), we are working to create opportunities to provide mentorship to equity-deserving candidates under their student work placement program and mentorship program for diverse producers.

Community College Internship:

As a postgraduate in the Advanced Filmmaking program at Centennial College, Gursimran understands the value of hands-on experience. Betterhalf Films has pledged to work with community art colleges to provide opportunities for fresh graduates to get hands-on experience in different departments of digital filmmaking. We hope to run 4- to 6-week internships, providing an inclusive environment for the future filmmakers of Canada.
